Survival Training: 3-Day Course With Doug Huffman from Sierra School of Survival

My family and I had an awesome weekend with the Sierra School of Survival. This is an outstanding program run by Doug Huffman. His survival knowledge is unapproachable and the confidence he instills in individuals is amazing to watch. We had an awesome time in the Sierra Nevada Mountains working on drill based activities. We also had a night mission for our team to complete. The bonding that happened between myself, my husband, and my 13 year old son, Fletcher was priceless. What an incredible experience! It was definitely worth it to take the time from our projects and chores to get out and try something new.

We practiced a lot of drill based activities but some I absolutely loved. Personally I enjoy practicing close quarters combat. Doug's no nonsense style brings these activities to life and sometimes in rather gruesome reality. We also practiced how to appropriately move and cross roads when you may not want to be noticed by others. Practicing lock picking was something I never thought I would be doing but it is rather easy to escape from handcuffs and you never know when that might come in handy, especially for all the ladies out there. Finally we talked a lot about the different camouflage systems that are out there and what works and doesn't for different areas. Check out these pictures for an example.

Here's Fletcher
I bet you can see him here!
But can you find him here?
You can go ahead and send me a post on where you think he is in the third picture and I'll let you know if your right.

During our trip we also had a night time mission. Our family (eventually dubbed team carnivore) had to pick an ideal camp location. This had to be a spot where the heat would reflect well off a rock from a small fire and our tarps could be hung close by or directly over the fire to keep us warm and dry. We then had to set up the tarp and start our fire. Fletcher took charge of the fire, while my husband and I got the tarps all set up.  Once the fire was prepared we had to figure out how to cook a rabbit that we were given. We ended up cooking it on a flat rock over the fire with a mixture of wild onions and sage. Darn was it good!
This experience was so great for our family! The bonding that occurred between us because we had to face this objective together and tackle it together could never be replaced. Sometimes when dealing with a thirteen year old boy it is hard to find some common ground. The team spirit that was harvested through this process brought us all right together. I was able to trust fully in his abilities and skills. I am so proud of the great man he is becoming and I have to thank Doug Huffman at Sierra School of Survival for providing the environment for this kind of realization to take place.

Survival Navigation: Designing Your Own 6-Pt Grid System

This is something that an old survival instructor, Doug Huffman from Sierra School of Survival, showed me that is really cool. This system has been used by the military for generations because it is unique to the creator and their group. Only you will be able to read your code so you can freely share your coordinates but only you and your group will know the meaning of it.

Let's get started. The first thing you will need is identical maps for everyone in your group. Then you put it in a clear plastic casing so it is protected but also if you write your code directly on the map anyone who finds your map will be able to decipher your code.

Next you make a grid system that overlays the entire map:
Imagine your map is under this grid. The star marks bugout point A

After you have your primary grid laid out you want to then divide each individual box into 10 segments (below is a blown up view of square 87-09)

Notice that the Star is at 5-5. So bug out point A would be at the coordinates 875-095.

After you have this grid system fit to your map you can choose whatever point you want to for a meeting spot. If your group gets to that spot and it is compromised. They can leave the rest of the group clear coordinates to go to that are visible to everyone but only the ones with the same code will know where that point is.

It is always a good idea to have multiple spots marked out for your group in advance. You can't be sure what will happen and what spot will be safe.

Survival In the Publishing World: Make my Publisher Eat Crow!

Pat yourself on the back as a personal thank-you from me to you! You all make my journey worth the ups and downs of the bumpy publishing road. Today I reached over 2,000 social media followers who are interested in what I am doing and I am completely honored. When I first decided to publish my book I had no idea I would meet so many outstanding individuals that would embrace my interests and my story.

My book, Day After Disaster, is an apocalyptic, adventure novel, featuring a dynamic young woman, mother and wife, Erika, who is thrust into a world turned upside down by a series of natural disasters. Finding herself alone in a city mutilated by this disastrous situation, she must save herself. Once free of the city confines, she desperately tries to navigate through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to get back home to her family. Not knowing if they are alive or dead she must call on all of her survival instincts to plot a course through this broken environment.

Get your copy here: Sara's Amazon Survival Store

It was published by Tate Publishing back in May of 2014. I was excited they had chosen my book for publication. They did a lot of wonderful things for me. They designed a great cover and do a wonderful job in their printing department. They designed a spectacular trailer for my book and gave me lots of information to get started on the marketing road.

Unfortunately they also did a lot of things wrong. The editing of my book was horrible and I had to take the novel and have it totally re-edited so that it was not full of errors. My trailer was produced but it was supposed to be aired on national television and I never received any word on if that actually happened or not. They were supposed to provide ongoing marketing support and all I get from them are sales emails encouraging me to personally purchase more books.

I try not to complain. I like to learn so I educated myself on book marketing strategies to fill the gaps Tate Publishing left behind. I was involved in sales in the past so I organize booths at local events where I can sell my books myself.  Things are going well. I have sold many books from my hand at these events.

The problem is when I sell the books myself I am not racking up internet sales. Tate Publishing states in their contract that Tate Publishing will refund my initial investment once my fans snatch up 1,000 copies of the novel through internet sales.

This is where you come in! If you have ever known or an author yourself, you know how bumpy the publishing road can be. I am reaching out to you today and urging you to please go over to Amazon.com and spend just $20 on my book. It is less than a pizza for dinner. You will love the action packed adventure. If just half of my social media followers went to help me out I would hit my 1000 sales and Tate would have to refund that money as promised.

If you have a request from me, some question you may need answered, publishing information you are curious about, want a review done, please don't hesitate to ask. The world can be a better place when people help people.

Thanks for lending me an ear! I can't wait to see how you like the story!
